Benedict XVI, the pope known for his hefty volumes of theology, is now trying brevity – spreading the faith through his own Twitter account.

The pontiff will tweet in eight languages starting Dec. 12 using his personal handle (at)Pontifex, responding live to questions about faith during his weekly general audience, the Vatican said Monday.

Within six hours of the Vatican’s announcement, Benedict had already garnered nearly 150,000 followers on the English version of (at)Pontifex alone, with thousands more following him in the eight other language accounts.

The New York Police Department has used a subpoena to force Twitter to disclose information about the source of a tweet saying “people are gonna die” at the Broadway theater staging a one-man show by former heavyweight champ Mike Tyson, the department said Tuesday.

The NYPD sought the subpoena after Twitter refused to cooperate in a probe of ominous posts that referenced the shooting deaths last month of 12 people last month at a showing of “The Dark Knight Rises” at an Aurora, Colo., movie theater, said NYPD spokesman Paul Browne.

China told foreign embassies Tuesday to stop publishing their own reports on air quality in the country, escalating its objections to a popular U.S. Embassy Twitter feed that tracks pollution in smoggy Beijing.

Only the Chinese government is authorized to monitor and publish air quality information and data from other sources may not be standardized or rigorous, Wu Xiaoqing, a vice environmental minister, told reporters.

“American Idol” did more than launch Carrie Underwood’s career – it helped shape the picture-perfect image she has today.

In interviews and public appearances, she never has a hair out of place and always says the right things. She only recently decided it was safe to join Twitter, and if there’s ever a controversial tweet from her account, assume it got hacked.

Her carefully crafted persona doesn’t come from “American Idol” media training, but rather from what she feels were cringe-worthy moments during her winning run on the show in 2005 that stereotyped her as a naive “country girl.”

Whitney Houston‘s funeral has only just begun … but Bobby Brown has already left the church.

It is unclear if Bobby left on his own accord or if he was asked to leave.

TMZ camera guys outside the funeral spotted Bobby ever-so-briefly on his way in … and his SUVs returned a short time later, though Bobby cannot be seen leaving (see video). View full article »
