Senate Republicans block Vote on Obama’s CIA Pick

A Republican critic of the Obama administration’s drone policy succeeded Wednesday in blocking a vote on John Brennan’s nomination to be CIA director over questions about the possible use of the unmanned weapons against American citizens.

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., mounted a filibuster against President Barack Obama’s pick to lead the spy agency and he demanded that Obama or Attorney General Eric Holder issue a statement making clear that drones would not be used in the United States to kill terrorism suspects who are U.S. citizens.

Just about everybody agrees Washington is a gridlocked mess. But who’s the man to fix it? After two years of brawling and brinkmanship between President Barack Obama and congressional Republicans, more voters trust Mitt Romney to break the stalemate, an Associated Press-GfK poll shows.

Romney’s message – a vote for Obama is a vote for more gridlock – seems to be getting through. Almost half of likely voters, 47 percent, think the Republican challenger would be better at ending the logjam, compared with 37 percent for Obama.

Mitt Romney launched a full-speed fall campaign for the White House on Thursday with a prime-time speech to a unified Republican convention and a nation divided politically as it struggles in a weak economy.

Though Romney has been pursuing the presidency for the better part of a decade, his acceptance speech was an important chance to introduce himself and forge a connection with millions of Americans who feel they need to know him better.

When Republicans nominated former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney for president, their vote brought to an end a long primary fight and set the stage for a close contest against President Barack Obama.

In a roll call of states Tuesday, New Jersey put Romney over the top, giving him the prize that eluded him four years ago. Romney is scheduled to accept his party’s nomination in a speech Thursday night.

Republicans kicked off Mitt Romney’s national convention Monday with the banging of a gavel before a smattering of delegates as Tropical Storm Isaac led them to cancel most of the opening-day program.

Party Chairman Reince Priebus pounded the gavel, cited the convention rules requiring a 2 p.m. Monday start and then immediately recessed the session. It took less than two minutes.

Mitt Romney introduced Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin as his Republican vice presidential running mate on Saturday, turning to the architect of a deeply conservative and intensely controversial long-term budget plan that would remake Medicare and cut trillions in federal spending.

In the campaign to come, Republicans will present economic solutions “that are bold, specific and achievable,” Romney said as he presented his political partner. “We offer our commitment to help create 12 million new jobs and to bring better take-home pay to middle class families.”

Pressing an election-year point, Republicans pushed yet another bill through the House on Wednesday to repeal the nation’s two-year-old health care law, a maneuver that forced Democrats to choose between President Barack Obama’s signature domestic achievement and a public that is persistently skeptical of its value.

The vote was 244-185, with five Democratic defectors siding with Republicans.
