Residents huddled outdoors Saturday night in a town near the epicenter of a powerful earthquake that struck the steep hills of China’s southwestern Sichuan province, leaving at least 156 people dead and more than 5,500 injured.

Saturday morning’s earthquake triggered landslides and disrupted phone and power connections in mountainous Lushan county five years after a devastating quake wreaked widespread damage across the region. The village of Longmen was hit particularly hard, with authorities saying nearly all the buildings there had been destroyed in a frightening minute-long shaking by the quake.

A major earthquake described as the strongest to hit Iran in more than half a century flattened homes and offices Tuesday on both sides of the Iran-Pakistan border, killing at least 46 people in the sparsely populated region and swaying skyscrapers and buildings as far away as New Delhi.

Iran’s Red Crescent said it was facing a “complicated emergency situation” in the area with villages scattered over desolate hills and valleys.

The U.S. Geological Survey says a magnitude-6.6 earthquake has struck the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. There are no immediate reports of damage.

The quake occurred in the Guanacaste region of the Central American nation, 38 miles from the town of Liberia. It had a depth of near 12 miles.

In an apparent change of heart, Iran said Tuesday it now welcomes foreign aid for victims of the deadly twin earthquakes that hit the country’s northwest last weekend.

The remarks indicate authorities were still struggling to cope with the quakes’ aftermath amid growing criticism that they failed to react timely and help the region along the borders with Azerbaijan and Armenia, where the 6.4 and 6.3 magnitude quakes Saturday killed 306 and injured more than 3,000 people.

A 6.6 magnitude earthquake struck off the Pacific Coast of Panama on Sunday evening, the U.S. Geological Survey reports.

The epicenter was 230 miles south of David, Panama, at a depth of 6.0 miles. Based on the earthquake magnitude, location, and historic tsunami records, a tsunami is not expected, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.

A moderate Texas earthquake today, 2012 was felt in Shreveport, Louisiana. The Texas earthquake was roughly seventy miles west of the Louisiana state line and struck in the predawn morning hours. No reports of injuries have yet to be detailed by local news.

USGS reports to news that a moderate 4.3 magnitude Texas earthquake erupted today Thursday, May 17, 2012 shortly after 3 am local time. The quake, however, had a nominal depth. USGS indicates to news that the quake began only three miles below the earth’s surface. As result, the moderate quake could be felt across the region.

A moderate earthquake rattled Southern California on Saturday morning, shaking homes across the Inland Empire region and causing buildings to sway in downtown Los Angeles.

The magnitude 4.1 quake struck at 8:07 a.m. The U.S. Geological Survey said it was centered along the San Andreas Fault about two miles northwest of Devore, in San Bernardino County. Some buildings swayed in downtown Los Angeles, about 60 miles to the west.
