Jerry Buss, the Los Angeles Lakers’ playboy owner who shepherded the NBA franchise to 10 championships from the `80s Showtime dynasty to the Kobe Bryant era, died Monday, his assistant said.

Buss died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, said Bob Steiner, his assistant. He was 80.

He’d been hospitalized for cancer, but the immediate cause of death was kidney failure, Steiner said.

The NBA is awarding New Orleans the 2014 All-Star game, now that Tom Benson has agreed to buy the Hornets and sign a lease extension at New Orleans Arena, a person familiar with the decision said.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press on Monday because an announcement by NBA Commissioner David Stern was scheduled for the afternoon.

With the Indiana Pacers on a West coast swing, team officials thought it would be a good idea to get team mascot Boomer out on the road for some good old fashioned halftime exercise. The furry yellow and blue creature made a stop at New Palestine (Ind.) High on Friday night, where he planned to complete his usual halftime dunkathon, in which he takes off on a trampoline and throws down an acrobatic slam. View full article »

McNeese State begins a two game home stand Wednesday when the Cowboys host Southeastern Louisiana in a Southland Conference basketball game.

Tipoff is 7 p.m. in Burton Coliseum and featured at the game will be $1 hot dogs.

As for the game itself, the Cowboys, who will also host Northwestern State on Saturday afternoon in a twinbill (Cowgirls play the Lady Demons at 1 p.m. and the Cowboy-Demon game will tipoff 30 minutes following), will be attempting to get back on the winning track after bowing to Texas State in their last appearance.
