Taking The Fun Out Of It

For some reason, things happen thru the years, and things that were once so fun, well just aren’t as exciting. For me personally, I LOVE Mardi Gras!!! But more than that, I LOVE my “King Cakes.”

However, in recent years, I have noticed that when you purchase a “King Cake” the baby is no longer hidden in the cake. I can vividly recall my sisters and I racing through a King Cake to find the baby. Every year, we anxiously awaited this time of year just so that we could get the cake, and compete to find the baby. Tradition has it, or should I say had it, that whomever found the baby in a given year, they were to buy the King Cake next year. And while we never really played up to that tradition, it was still fun to “try and find the baby.”

Springsteen packs NOLA for Jazz Fest

Bruce Springsteen has closed out the first weekend of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival with a 2 ½-hour show that combined crowd-pleasers such as “Born to Run” with the cover tune of his new CD, “Wrecking Ball.”

Fans began staking out spots when the Fair Grounds opened at 11 a.m. Sunday, rushing from the entrance gates to spread blankets and set up chairs close to the stage. By the time Springsteen stepped on stage fans were stretched around the fairgrounds track, some standing 10 to 12 people deep.

At one point New Orleans blues legend Dr. John took the stage with Springsteen, joining him on “Something You Got” and “Oh Mary Don’t You Weep.”.

Contraband Days Announces Music Acts & Branding Change for 2012

Contraband Days

The Lake Charles/Southwest Louisiana Convention and Visitor’s Bureau hosted a news conference today to reveal the rebranding and schedule of events including Josh Turner performing for the 2012 Contraband Days.

The festival has a new look for its 55th anniversary after undergoing an extensive branding exercise last year to “pinpoint the demographics and interests of target audiences to ensure the offerings and branding of the festival are communicating the spirit of the event.” View full article »

NOLA Mardi Gras

Twelfth Night, the feast of Epiphany, was celebrated by Creole society from the early days of colonial Louisiana. These Bals de Roi (the King’s Ball) were given at plantations and homes for family and friends; the highlight was the cutting of the King Cake (Gateau des Rois), and the finder of the bean—la feve—in his or her cake became Le Roi or La Reine de la feve, and would reign over the next ball, which they were to host. Thus a series of balls began each season and continued until the final great ball of Mardi Gras evening.
